    Providing shade to encourage pedestrian and bicycle travel is the most obvious purpose of the shadeway. It also provides way-finding and easily recognizable landmarks to navigate the labyrinth that is the Wasat al Medina of Abu Dhabi.

    Portland's North Park Blocks provided inspiration for establishing a hierchy of four levels of shading devices; Boulevards, Avenues, the Shadeway and Installations. Shadow patterns and natural ventilation make the pedestrian realm more comfortable and inform the traveler of the time of day and season of the year.
